THE SALVATION ARMY OF SHIAWASSEE COUNTY held its annual “Behind the Red Shield” dinner Wednesday, Aug. 10 at the Owosso Citadel, 302 E. Exchange St., Owosso. The organization holds the dinner every year as a thank you to the many local businesses and individuals who contribute to the charitable organization’s causes throughout the year. In addition to the presentation of awards, the Salvation Army provided dinner for approximately 30 people and the Salvation Army of Owosso Citadel youth band entertained the crowd.

Salvation Army of Shiawassee County Lieutenant Jonathan Tamayo (center) is shown here with this year’s award winners. Salvation Army Youth Advisory Council member Jessica Houska and advisor Margaret Bowers accepted a thank you award for their efforts with the council, George Turnwald (second from right) was presented with the Bell Ringer Award, and Lance Ellenberg received the Sharing Is Caring award.

Tamayo presented Ellenberg with the Sharing Is Caring award, which is an award given by the Salvation Army of Shiawassee County for the first time this year. Tamayo surprised Ellenberg with the award, while praising him for supporting the organization for years without expecting recognition.

Salvation Army Youth Advisory Council Chairman Steve Flayer also spoke during the dinner and reminded everyone in attendance that it is their combined efforts that really make a difference. (Independent Photo/Graham Sturgeon)
