If you are waiting for your Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) payment, today—April 9th, 2025—could be your payday. The Social Security Administration (SSA) is now sending out checks to eligible Americans in a specific group of disability and retirement beneficiaries.
This is part of the regular monthly payment schedule, and only those who meet two important requirements will receive their check today. If you’re part of this group, you could see your payment appear in your bank account in the next few hours—especially if you’re enrolled in Direct Deposit.
Who Will Receive the April 9th SSDI Check?
The SSA follows a set schedule to send out monthly disability and retirement checks. These payments are not random and depend on two main factors:
The year you started receiving benefits
Your birth date
For those receiving SSDI payments, here’s how it works:
If you began receiving Social Security before May 1997, you are placed in Group 1, and your check is always sent on the 3rd of the month. Your birthday does not matter in this case.
However, if you began receiving benefits after May 1997, your payment date will be based on your birth date, and you’ll fall into one of three remaining groups.
Understanding SSDI Payment Groups
To make things easy, here’s how the SSA divides payment groups for people who started collecting after May 1997:
Group 2: Paid on the second Wednesday of the month – April 9 this month. Includes those born between the 1st and 10th of any month.
Group 3: Paid on the third Wednesday – April 16, for birthdays from the 11th to 20th.
Group 4: Paid on the fourth Wednesday – April 23, for birthdays from the 21st to 31st.
If your birthday falls in the right range and your benefits started after May 1997, then Group 2 is your group, and April 9th is your payment day this month.

Can You Change Your SSDI Payment Group?
Once your benefit start date is set, your payment group is fixed permanently. This means that your check will always arrive on the same day each month—either the 3rd, or the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th Wednesday depending on your group. You cannot switch groups later.
The only time this schedule changes is if your assigned payment day falls on a weekend or a public holiday. In that case, the payment will be sent on the nearest earlier working day.
What If You Miss Today’s Payment?
If you’re eligible and don’t receive your payment today, there are a few things to check:
Make sure you’re enrolled in Direct Deposit for faster access.
Confirm that you meet both requirements: benefits started after May 1997 and birthday is between the 1st and 10th.
Log into your My Social Security account online to view your payment status.
If you’re not in Group 2, your payment will come on either April 16 or April 23, depending on your date of birth.
