On April 9, 2025, the Social Security Administration (SSA) will send out another round of monthly payments. But not all Social Security recipients will get their check on this date. Only a specific group of retirees—Group 2 beneficiaries—will receive their payments on April 9.
Knowing which group you belong to is important to avoid confusion and to plan your monthly finances better. Let’s understand who qualifies for the April 9 check and who will have to wait.
Who Gets Paid on April 9, 2025?
The SSA follows a fixed schedule to distribute monthly Social Security benefits. Payments are made based on two key factors:
When you started receiving benefits
Your birthdate
For April 9, only retirees in Group 2 will get their payment. To be part of Group 2, you must meet both of the following conditions:
You started receiving Social Security after May 1997
Your birthday falls between the 1st and 10th of any month
If you meet these two rules, the SSA will send your April 2025 benefit on Wednesday, April 9, which is the second Wednesday of the month.
Who Will Not Receive a Check on April 9?
If you’re not in Group 2, your payment will come on a different date. Here’s who won’t get paid on April 9:
Group 1 retirees: Those who started benefits before May 1997 (they were already paid on April 3)
Group 3 retirees: People who started benefits after May 1997 and have birthdays between the 11th and 20th
Group 4 retirees: Those with birthdays from the 21st to 31st and who also started receiving benefits after May 1997
These groups will receive their payments on later Wednesdays in April, based on their birthdates.
How Much Will You Receive?
The amount of your Social Security benefit depends on your work history, earnings, and retirement age. If you’ve already been receiving benefits this year, your April check will be the same amount as previous months.
If this is your first-ever Social Security payment, the amount will stay the same throughout the rest of 2025 (unless there’s a special update).
How to Get Paid Faster: Use Direct Deposit
To receive your Social Security money on April 9 itself, you need to have Direct Deposit activated. This method sends the payment directly to your bank account on the same day.
If you don’t use Direct Deposit, you’ll get your payment by mail, which can take a few extra days. To avoid delays, it’s recommended to enroll in Direct Deposit through your My SSA account or by calling the SSA.
