After bringing a loaded handgun into Genesee County High School, the student charged

FLINT, MI — A teen is facing felony charges for allegedly bringing a loaded gun into a local school building.

A student at Flex High School on Clio Rd. in Flint was detained on Monday morning after a routine search revealed a gun in his backpack, according to the prosecutor’s office.

School security handed over the loaded 9mm semi-automatic to Flint Police Department. The gun was reported stolen.

The student was arrested, and he now faces the following charges:

  • one count of receiving and concealing a stolen firearm, a 10-year felony
  • one count of carrying a concealed weapon, a 5-year felony

According to Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton, this incident did not pose a threat to any schools.

“I want to commend school officials for their efforts in discovering the weapon, detaining the student and seizing the gun before any chance of something tragic occurring,” according to Leyton.

“While the investigation indicates that no threats were made against anyone during this event, I want to make it abundantly clear to the public that bringing a gun or any lethal weapon into a school is totally unlawful, and we will be vigilant in holding individuals accountable under the law. This is a very serious situation, and it is being handled properly.”
