The “Book Partners Program” will soon begin at Perry Elementary School. This program is after school for second graders in need of extra practice in reading. The program is coordinated through Looking Glass Community Services and funded through generous donations from the Detroit Conference Board of Discipleship, the West Michigan Conference Board of Discipleship, the Greater Perry Lions Club, and the Perry Masons.

Volunteer adult mentors are needed to enjoy time with a student one-on one and to focus on practicing and expanding the student’s reading skills. All learning materials will be provided and are self-explanatory and easy to use.

Bookpartners meet most Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3 to 4 p.m. from Oct. 25 through Dec. 15. The program will resume from Feb. to April. The school is welcoming volunteers for either or both days, or as substitutes for the regular volunteers.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact the Bookpartners’ program coordinator Amanda Steiger at (989) 666-4677 or email at bluesteiger@yahoo.com. There will be a training session for volunteers on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 3 p.m. in the Perry Elementary Library. Volunteers will be required to complete and pass a Volunteer Background Check, per school district’s policy.
