Authorities in Livingston County are investigating the cause of a crash on Interstate 96 that killed three people and critically injured two others.
The collision occurred shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, February 26, on eastbound I-96 between Fowlerville Road and M-59.
According to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office, a 54-year-old Sterling Heights man driving a BMW westbound near M-59 lost control, crossed the median, and collided with a Mercury Mountaineer SUV in the eastbound lanes.
Two people in the Mountaineer died at the scene, including the driver, a 68-year-old Fowlerville man, and a passenger, a 91-year-old Howell woman. Two more passengers on the Mountaineer were taken to the University of Michigan Hospital and were listed in critical condition.
The BMW was taken to a hospital, where he died, according to officials.
The sheriff’s office is still investigating whether alcohol and/or speed played a role in the collision.
The eastbound side of I-96 was closed for approximately four hours on Wednesday, with first responders on the scene. Traffic was backed up for miles until the freeway reopened around 7:45 p.m.
No names are being revealed at this time.
