A familiar coffee chain is opening a new location in East Lansing

A coffee chain is opening a new location in a vacant building in East Lansing, putting an end to speculation about what will happen there.

Meridian Township is Getting A New Coffee Spot

According to the Lansing State Journal, East Lansing will soon be home to another Starbucks.

When the Lansing State Journal learned that a developer wanted to demolish a vacant building off Grand River Avenue, word spread about a “coffee-shop restaurant with a drive-thru” coming to Meridian Township.

Where is Starbucks Opening?

That vacant building was the former Bank of America, and is located at 2731 East Grand River Avenue in East Lansing, right next to the new Trader Joe’s.

Plans for this Starbucks appear to have been in the works since December 2023, when an application was submitted for a special use permit for the drive-thru.

When is Starbucks Opening the New East Lansing Location?
Work on the new coffee shop has already begun.

The former building was demolished in late 2024, and site work on the property is complete. Work on the building’s frame should begin in the coming weeks.

According to reports, the “location is expected to open by late summer and will likely employ at least 20 people” .

How Many Starbucks are in the Lansing Area?

There are currently 18 Starbucks locations spread across Eaton Rapids, DeWitt, Grand Ledge, Williamston, and everywhere in between. When this one opens, we will have 19.

In terms of the number of Starbucks locations, Michigan ranks 15th out of 50 states. In 2024, Michigan had 283 Starbucks locations. It’s a drop in the bucket compared to California’s 3,080. Compare that to the 69 locations across the entire continent of Australia.
