Sadly, a 19-year-old mother and her newborn baby died within hours of each other. Mellodie-Ocean Jarman had an emergency C-section on February 2 and died shortly afterward in Greater Manchester.
The first-time mother felt faint and dizzy on her way to a routine pregnancy scan. This was two days before she and her newborn died, and doctors had sent her home with medication. Even as she took her medication, which included antibiotics, she became increasingly ill.
The Daily Mail reports that Jarman’s family called an ambulance after she collapsed in her mother’s arms. At this point, she was not breathing, so paramedics rushed her to Royal Bolton Hospital while attempting to revive her.
Once at the hospital, doctors performed an emergency C-section. They delivered her seven-week-old daughter Athena-Pearl at 12:32 a.m. last Sunday. Jarman died after about 80 minutes.
A few hours later, around 4 a.m., the family received word from the doctors that Athena-Pearl was “deteriorating.” The baby’s father, 18-year-old Danial Darbyshire, spent time with his newborn daughter before she died at 6:30 PM.
Steven Darby, Jarman’s 32-year-old uncle, told the outlet how devastated the family was. “She was a healthy 19-year-old with no health issues, so we just don’t understand what happened. We don’t know anything until an investigation determines the full scope of what occurred.”
Jarman’s partner is even more devastated by the tragedy. “He doesn’t know what to do with himself, which is understandable in these situations — he’s lost everything,” the uncle said of Darbyshire.
The family has since set up a GoFundMe to help with funeral expenses. “Please, I ask you to help us lay our beloved girl and her precious baby daughter to rest,” according to the biography. “The pain we are experiencing is incomprehensible. Daniel and Mellodie’s family is unprepared, navigating this unimaginable loss while trying to understand what lies ahead.”
Donors have officially surpassed the family’s £7,000 goal, raising more than £13,500. We don’t know what caused Jarman and her daughter’s tragic deaths. As the investigation continues, more information may become available.
