It’s a lovely time of year to turn up the heat and look forward to getting out of the freezing cold and into our warm, comfortable clothes at home. That being said, it’s understandable that our Consumers Energy bills will rise again, as we use more gas to heat our homes and apartments.
I was surprised to see a $270 energy bill after the previous bill was $52.
Surprises like that may become a regular occurrence, as Consumers Energy announced a more consistent rise in energy costs, potentially costing us all more money to keep warm.
The paperwork they just filed with the utility regulators appears to increase natural gas rates by $248 million. Based on our current rates, that represents a 12% price increase over what we see on our bills.
You may be wondering, “Why in the hell would they even think of doing this?”
They basically gave us the old conglomerate, with the razzle-dazzle promising to improve safety measures, something something infrastructure, and something something reliability.
You can read a detailed breakdown of the projected increase here, but I doubt environmentalists will allow us to proceed.
At a time when rent is far too high and buying a house is more difficult than ever for young buyers, Consumers Energy’s increase appears to be completely unnecessary. Do you think it is too much?
