In the United States, many people receive Social Security retirement checks each month. However, for some, this money is not enough to cover all their needs. That’s where the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefit comes in—an extra monthly payment designed to support the most financially vulnerable citizens.
If you already qualify for SSI, you’ll receive this payment every month. But it’s important to know the schedule and understand who is eligible. This article will explain when the next SSI payments are coming, who can receive them, and how much you could get.
When Will the Next SSI Payments Be Made?
SSI checks are usually sent on the 1st day of each month. If the 1st falls on a weekend or holiday, the payment is sent on the nearest previous working day.
For May 2025, the payment will arrive on May 1st, as the day falls on a weekday with no scheduling issues. So, there will be no delays in the arrival of this benefit for that month.
But here’s some good news for SSI recipients—May will have two SSI payments, not just one. This happens because the June 1st payment falls on a weekend, so the June check will be sent early, on May 30th. This gives recipients a “double payment” in May, which can be a big help.

Why Do Some Months Have Two SSI Payments?
This happens due to how the Social Security Administration (SSA) schedules payments. If the 1st of a month is on a weekend or public holiday, the SSA pays out the check on the last working day of the previous month.
So in May 2025, you’ll receive:
First SSI payment: May 1st (for the month of May)
Second SSI payment: May 30th (advance payment for June)
But remember: you won’t receive another SSI check during June, since it was already paid early.
Who Is Eligible for SSI?
To receive SSI, you must meet certain conditions:
Be 65 years or older, or have a qualifying disability
Have low or no income
Have limited resources or savings
SSI is designed to help people with limited financial means, such as the elderly, disabled individuals, and others who need extra monthly support.
How Much Money Can You Get from SSI?
SSI benefit amounts can vary, but here are the maximum payments for 2025:
Individuals: Up to $967 per month
Eligible couples: Up to $1,450 per month
These amounts may change depending on your living situation, income, and other benefits you receive. If your spouse also qualifies for SSI, you’ll receive a combined benefit which can provide extra financial help.
