As thunderstorms move across southwest and south-central Lower Michigan, a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until late tonight.
Instead of issuing a tornado watch, the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) issued a severe thunderstorm watch. The cause is a line of thunderstorms that are expected to mostly produce straight-line winds as they gel together. While isolated tornadoes are a possibility, they are not the primary threat from severe weather.
In Illinois, wind gusts have varied from 60 mph to the destructive 75 mph. The south-central and southwest regions of Michigan may experience the same kinds of gusts.
Until 9 p.m., a severe thunderstorm watch is in force.
The severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for all of the major cities in south-central and southwest Lower Michigan. From Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, and Holland east to Lansing and Jackson, a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect.
Depending on whether the t-storms in southwest Michigan hold together, another severe thunderstorm watch is expected to be issued for southeast Lower Michigan in an hour or two.
