Another rescue vehicle was struck by a driver as Michigan State Police investigated a different crash

Shiawasee County Michigan – Following a collision with a police cruiser in Shiawassee County, authorities are reminding drivers of Michigan’s Move Over Law.

Michigan’s expanded “Move Over” law took effect in 2019. It required drivers to reduce their speed to 10 mph below the posted limit and yield their lane when passing police or emergency vehicles on the side of the road.

It happened Saturday on Interstate 69. According to authorities, a Michigan State Police trooper from Flint was driving their cruiser when he was struck. The trooper was reportedly on the scene policing a previous crash when they were struck.

The police cruiser sustained significant damage, but no injuries were reported.

Drivers must slow down and move over for stationary emergency vehicles. If drivers are unable to move over due to traffic, weather, or other road conditions, they must slow down and proceed with caution.

Drivers who do not pull over or slow down may receive a citation with a $400 fine and two points on their license. If a driver injures or kills someone, it becomes a felony punishable by significant jail time.
