A hospital employee who opened fire on a coworker in their medical facility’s parking garage has been apprehended following a tense lockdown.
Terrified staff and patients at Troy Corewell Health Beaumont Hospital outside Detroit, Michigan, cowered in fear after the gunman opened fire at 7 a.m. Thursday.
The shooter targeted his coworker, a 25-year-old man, firing five shots and striking him twice in the arm, according to the Troy Police Department.
As law enforcement rushed to the scene, the hospital was put on lockdown, and surrounding schools tightened security.
Cops believe the suspect fled the hospital after the shooting and have dispatched helicopters and K9 units to assist with the urgent search.
Meanwhile, the victim was taken to the emergency room and is now in stable condition, according to the hospital.
According to investigators, a full statement about the arrest will be released soon.
According to ABC affiliate WXYZ, the incident became public after an Emergency Alert was issued warning of an active shooter.
“Avoid the area and shelter in place,” read the alert.
“Out of an abundance of caution, the hospital is on lockdown,” the statement read.
“Patients with services scheduled should not come to the hospital at this time.”
A video shot at the scene showed dozens of cop cars with flashing lights surrounding the property.
Barbara, a medical assistant at the hospital, described her fear as she drove to work and saw the cop cars.
“I was getting into the parking lot getting ready to clock in and another coworker was screaming to get in my car there was an active shooter,” she stated to NBC’s WDIV affiliate.
“I saw a line of police officers walking through the parking garage with their guns drawn.
“It is scary. You go to work thinking you’ll be safe.
“I’m worried about my coworkers and patients.”

Schools in the surrounding district issued a warning to parents about the shooting.
“We want to assure you that our schools are still safe and secure,” wrote a Troy School District spokesperson.
“We have taken additional security measures, and our team is closely monitoring the situation in coordination with local authorities.”
Terrified residents reported online that the staff is inside hiding while cops sweep the scene.
“Need my prayer warriors to start praying,” one user wrote on X.
“My daughter’s at work. They have locked down the facility so she is safe.”
Another person wrote, “My wife called and told me she was safe but scared.

The Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital has 530 licensed beds and operates 24 hours a day.
