A house fire in Corunna has left a family of three homeless, and four animals dead

Corunna, Michigan – Three people, including a five-year-old, were left homeless, and four cats died when their Corunna home caught fire on Tuesday.

The fire was reported Tuesday afternoon in the 300 block of John Street. Homeowner Greg Kopicko believes the dryer caught fire, and the flames quickly spread throughout the back of the house.

He escaped safely with his girlfriend and their 5-year-old child.

Kopicko only sustained minor smoke inhalation injuries when he attempted to return inside to rescue the family’s four cats. However, firefighters discovered all four cats had died.

“My 5-year-old is devastated” by the loss of the cats, Kopicko explained.

Shiawassee Street was closed for several hours as four fire departments worked to extinguish the flames. Kopicko and his family are working with the Red Cross to make temporary housing arrangements.

His girlfriend had lived in the house for over 30 years, but they had no insurance. Kopicko believes that the house and all of their belongings will be declared a complete loss.

A GoFundMe page has been started to assist the family in recovering from the fire.
