Winter Weather Advisory Issued for 16 Michigan Counties Up to six inches of snow and a layer of ice

More than a dozen counties in Northern Michigan and the eastern end of the Upper Peninsula are experiencing significant snowfall today.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for 16 counties, where heavy, wet snow is expected to accumulate today.

Winds gusting to 40 mph may make travel hazardous at times. The forecast even includes an ice glaze. The Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 5 p.m. today.

It includes the following counties: Emmet, Cheboygan, Leelanau, Antrim, Otsego, Benzie, Grand Traverse, Kalkaska, Chippewa, Mackinac, Charlevoix, Crawford, and Presque Isle. It also includes the Mackinac and Bois Blanc islands.

“Total snow accumulations between 2 and 6 inches and a potential light glaze of ice,” the NWS said. “Locally higher snowfall amounts are possible. Winds gusting up to 40 mph.

“Roads, especially bridges and overpasses, are likely to become slick and hazardous. Plan for slippery road conditions. Slow down and exercise caution while driving.”

NWS meteorologists in Gaylord shared a radar forecast, which shows the expected snow impact:
