GAVEN ACKERMAN, a 2016 Durand High School graduate, has been chosen by the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police (MACP) to receive the 2016 Youth Scholarship Award in the amount of $4,000. According to a spokesperson, the Association received 39 applications from throughout the state that were outstanding candidates. Ackerman was selected based on many factors, including his exceptional achievements in school and his achievements on a personal level.
Candidates were required to complete the application process which included listing school related activities, positions held in organizations, involvement in civic and community activities, awards/recognitions, an essay explaining future educational plans, and their intent to use the scholarship award. Additionally, all candidates had to be endorsed by an agency head, who is a MACP member.
Ackerman’s application was endorsed by Chief Kevin Lenkart, of Owosso Public Safety, and was present along with Chief Jason Hartz of the Durand Police Department to present the scholarship award to Ackerman at Durand High School during the Senior Awards Ceremony held on Wednesday, May 25. He will also be honored at the MACP’s Awards Banquet later this month at Boyne Highland Resort.
Gaven is the son of Frank and Shereen Ackerman, and was a Criminal Justice student at Owosso Baker College through the Shiawassee Regional Education District’s Countywide program and plans to continue his education at Baker College in the criminal justice field.
