THE BYRON MIDDLE SCHOOL 8th-grade class participated in the 2nd annual “Watercraft Wednesday” boat float held at the Swartz Creek swimming pool on Wednesday, March 28. This activity demonstrated the final assessment for their 2018 “Project Based Learning” unit, involving students working collaboratively during the entire third marking period to learn about Native American cultures, and then recreate Native American boats to sail. “Project Based Learning” teaches students across all areas of the curriculum with a cumulative end product, such as the boats.

“This year’s group was FANTASTIC!” notes Byron Superintendent Tricia Murphy-Alderman. “Their attitude each week is to be commended. Everyone gave 100 percent of their effort and worked together to help those who were struggling with the assignments. The end result: a great night!”

Shown paddling their creation, named “Titanic II,” are history teachers Dave Richardson (left) and Greg Kimsel.
