VOLUNTEERS are needed for the this fall’s Stream Sampling of the Shiawassee River, said Lauri Elbing, the new executive director of the Friends of the Shiawassee River, who was the speaker for the Shiawassee Regional Chamber of Commerce Networking at Noon luncheon Sept. 29 at the Comstock Inn & Conference Center, downtown Owosso, introduced by emcee David Hood (right).

“Volunteers will act as citizen scientists by collecting benthic macroinvertebrates. We can learn a lot about water quality by the types and quantities of the bugs that we find or don’t find.

“The information we collect from Owosso, Corunna, Byron, St. Charles and Chesaning will give our communities an appraisal of our watershed’s health. If you like to have fun and want to experience a day in the life of a scientist or are just curious about these things, check your calendar, call us to confirm your spot on a team and join us out on our river.”

Fall Stream Team sampling dates include: Oct. 20, 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at DeVries Nature Conservancy; Oct. 21, 3 to 5 p.m. near Owosso City Hall; Oct. 22, noon to 2 p.m. on the Bad River in St. Charles; Oct. 22, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. near the South State Drain; Oct. 23, noon to 2:30 p.m. in Byron. Oct 24 is tentative at the Shiatown Dam; Oct. 24 is tentative in McCurdy Park at Corunna; Oct. 26, time to be determined, in Chesaning.

“The Friends will provide you with training and all the equipment we need to get the job done,” she said. “You may bring your own waders and please come dressed in clothing that you don’t mind getting wet and dirty. This activity is intended for adults and middle school-aged kids or older, but children with a sincere interest in the activity may participate with adult supervision.
