APPROXIMATELY 500 rock-n-roll fans attended the final Wednesday Night Live concert of the summer on Wednesday, Aug. 15 in Durand, as the Durand Veterans of Rock ‘n’ Roll kicked off their 2018 summer tour.

The band’s composition varies based on availability and the cost of air travel, but taking the stage on Aug. 15 was lead vocalist Bob Sager; Pat Carmody on guitar; Dan Ade on flute, strings, synthesizer, keys and percussion; Warren Brady and Dave Wasielewski on drums; Rick Bowden on keys and backup vocals; vocalist and percussionist Debbie Love; vocalist Desiree Resce-Hay; Blair Smith, saxophone; Jeff Semple, rhythm and lead; Kathy Van Kuren, vocals; and Mark McKay, bass and vocals.

The group also includes Bill Bartilson, Jim Chamberlain, Joel Choate, Steve Force, Mike Jones, Jim Yankee and others. Warm, dry weather helped with the large attendance number, but it is clear that the 2017 Durand Veterans of Rock ‘n’ Roll concert left quite an impression on those who attended, making it the perfect conclusion to the 2018 Wednesday Night Live concert series.

“We didn’t know they (the Durand Veterans of Rock ‘n’ Roll) were going to play, so we were very happy when they told us they would be available,” shared Wednesday Night Live committee chair Bruce Tomlinson. “The concert series doesn’t usually go this late in the year, but it has worked out pretty well for us. This is the first year on the committee for Candyce (Wolsfeld) and I, and we are looking forward to next year. I have already started lining up bands. I’m looking at other local bands, and a few of the bands from this year will be back as well.”

The Wednesday Night Live concert series features family-friendly acts, with music mostly from the country and rock genres. Tomlinson can be reached by email at btomlins@fentonschools.org

The Durand Veterans of Rock ‘n’ Roll, a collection of musicians hailing from the greater Durand area, was formed last summer to raise money for the Durand Veterans Memorial Park. The benefit concert was held at Optimist Park in Durand, and nearly 1,000 local music enthusiasts packed Optimist Park to witness the once-in-a-lifetime event. Concertgoers were dazzled by the level of talent exhibited, and calls began almost immediately for an encore performance.

The band’s members, although spread across the country, have agreed, and the Durand Veterans of Rock ‘n’ Roll will play again. This summer, the concert will benefit Welcome Home Veterans, a veteran housing facility that is being planned by Welcome Home Assisted Living owner/operator Kim Bowen and her board of directors.

The concert will be held in Bancroft on Saturday, Aug. 25 at the future site of Welcome Home Veterans, on the property of the now-closed Wilbur Bills Elementary. The concert will be outside, in the expansive yard behind the old school, with gates opening at 4 p.m. A service honoring veterans, including a flyover and the playing of Taps, will begin at 5:30 p.m., and music will begin shortly thereafter.

General Admission (lawn) tickets can be purchased for $20, or it is $30 for VIP (tent) tickets. Those purchasing lawn tickets will need to bring their own seating, while VIP ticket holders will have seating provided under the large circus tent in front of the stage. Tickets can be purchased online at www.squareup.com/store/durand-veterans-of-rock-n-roll.

To purchase 2018 Durand Veterans of Rock ‘n’ Roll t-shirts, email organizers at durandveteransofrock@gmail.com. T-shirts are available in small and 3X sizes by request. Shirts cost $20 each, or $22 for 2X and 3X sizes. All proceeds from shirt sales, as with the entire event, will go to Welcome Home Veterans.

The concert is being organized by band members, led by lead vocalist Bob Sager, along with Durand Reed-Raymond VFW Post 2272 and Greg Martin, the owner of Jim’s Pizza.
