THE 100+ WOMEN WHO CARE of the Greater Durand Area met at the Durand United Methodist Church on Thursday, Sept. 19 for its seventh voting meeting. After hearing from three nonprofit organizations – I Cancer Vive, the Kerr Cares Closet/Neal Necessities and the Durand Senior Center – the group selected the Shiawassee Council on Aging – Durand Senior Center to receive their donation of $12,300. The Durand Senior Center will use the donation to purchase a new commercial oven. The donation pushes the group’s total donated to $68,900.

The 100+ Women Who Care of the Greater Durand Area is a group of women who are interested in supporting the local community of the greater Durand area – including Durand, Byron, Bancroft, Lennon, Gaines and Vernon – by contributing to local organizations together, as a unit, to increase the impact of their donation. Members are encouraged to nominate their favorite 501(c)(3) organization – three names are drawn from a hat at the beginning of each meeting – to “pitch” their organization to the group. Members cast their votes and the lucky recipient is announced at the meeting.

Women are encouraged to sign up via the website prior to the meeting but can also do so the night of. The group’s website is http://100womenwhocaredurand.org.

For those members who have not yet contributed their donations, checks can be made payable to: “Shiawassee Council on Aging” with “Durand-Oven” on the memo line. Checks can be dropped off at Dietrich’s Flower Shop or Bancroft Veterinary, or they can be mailed to Linda Greeson, 101 W. Maple St., Bancroft, MI 48414. There is also a credit card option available, with a $3.90 processing fee, at www.ubackforgood.com/donor/#!/app/nonprofit/822445.
