St. John’s United Church of Christ, located at 429 N. Washington St. in Owosso, is pleased to announce the arrival of Pastor Mike Cooper as the new pastor. Pastor Mike Cooper grew up in Howell and graduated from Michigan State University with an electrical engineering degree in 1983. He decided to follow his call to ministry later in life and received his Master of Divinity from the Ecumenical Theological Seminary in Detroit in 2009. He was ordained in 2011 at Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ in Lansing, where he served as their Associate Pastor.

Prior to becoming a minister, he worked for TRW as an engineering manager for 13 years and served for 15 years as CEO of IQE, an engineering services company he founded. Pastor Mike’s passions include spiritual growth, social justice and community. He leads the St. John’s UCC Sunday service in a way designed to appeal to a wide variety of people, no matter where they are in their faith journey. His messages engage both the heart and the mind, and incorporate music, multimedia and prayer. In addition to leading worship, Pastor Mike provides one-on-one spiritual coaching.

Pastor Mike is married to Lisa Dedden Cooper, who manages legislative advocacy for AARP. In his spare time he enjoys biking, astronomy and amateur radio, and he and Lisa have two rescue poodles named Butters and Rocky. Pastor Mike and St. John’s UCC share a commitment to inclusiveness, welcoming all to participate in the life of the church regardless of their race, age, ethnicity, marital status, family structure, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, education, physical or mental ability, addictions, socio-economic status or faith background.

St. John’s invites the community to welcome Pastor Mike and his wife, and to join them for services at 10:30 a.m. on Sundays. For more information, visit the church’s website,
