CORUNNA HIGH SCHOOL athletic star Zach Sawyer officially committed to Cornerstone University on Wednesday, Nov. 22 during a signing ceremony at Corunna High School (CHS) that was attended by his coaches, parents, friends, teammates, and CHS teachers and administrators. A three-sport athlete at CHS, Sawyer will play second base for the Golden Eagles of Cornerstone University, which is located in Grand Rapids. Sawyer expects to graduate from CHS with a 3.7 GPA, and he will pursue a degree in sports management at Cornerstone.

Football coach Kyle Robinson, basketball coach Rocky Buscemi, and baseball coach Chuck Osika all praised Sawyer for always being a team player, and for his dedication and work ethic. Buscemi noted that, “Zach has always done things the right way. Basketball was probably third on Zach’s list when it comes to sports, but you would never know by how hard he works. He embodies something that, as a 40-year-old man, I still struggle with, which is living in the moment.”

Osika told several stories that showed Sawyer’s dedication and work ethic. “During the summer, Zach would often have football conditioning in the morning, baseball in the afternoon, and basketball at night,” Osika explained. “He would sometimes tell me how tired he was. I would let him know that it was OK if he went home, but a few minutes later he would be stepping back into the batter’s box. No matter how a game goes, he has never blamed his teammates. Cornerstone is getting a heck of a deal, and Zach will be a great representative of Corunna High School and the Corunna community.”

Sawyer thanked his coaches, Robinson, Buscemi, Osika, Jason Schemenauer and Sam Shuster; along with his parents and teammates. He will join the baseball team in August of 2018, and he expects to be able to compete for a spot on the team right away. “Like Coach Osika said, baseball is a tough game, but when I’m struggling I know it is just in my head, so my experiences here at Corunna will make any future challenges I encounter much easier to overcome,” Sawyer said on Nov. 22.
