VOLUNTEER DRIVERS HONORED – The Shiawassee County Veterans Affairs and Services (SCVAS) honored their eleven volunteer Disabled American Veterans (DAV) drivers with a luncheon on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at the county’s Surbeck Building in downtown Corunna.

The individuals volunteer their time to drive Shiawassee County veterans to VA medical appointments all over the state, and Director Jerilyn Strein reports that the program exceeded their 2014 numbers in total hours on the road, number of miles driven and veterans transported.

While all of the numbers were up from 2014, the most important statistic, passengers transported, rose by 79 persons this year to 243 veterans.

In addition to the celebratory luncheon that included all of the volunteers, Strein also recognized the three volunteers who donated the most time over the past year. Joe Jordan was the first-place volunteer with 238 hours

donated, 5,696 miles driven and 52 veterans transported; Eugene Brown was the second-place volunteer with 166 hours, 4,250 miles and 32 veterans; and Gary Duehring was the third-place volunteer with 150 hours, 3,614 miles and 27 veterans. Each winner was given a pin, a chocolate bar and a certificate for their acknowledgement.

The SCVAS is always looking for more volunteers. Applications can be found at the department’s Surbeck Building office, or interested parties can contact the office by phone, (989) 743-2231.

Gathered were (from left): Duehring, Brown, Jordan, Chuck Hegg, Robert Driscoll, Clayton Breiler, John Strein, Douglas Johns, Michael Judd and George Welte. Not pictured were Lloyd Putnam and Tony Tursak.
