The January meeting of the Shiawassee County Historical Society will be 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 24 at our Museum/Archives Building, corner of Wilkinson and North M-52.
Our speaker will be Len Thomas from Swartz Creek and his topic is Two Major Train Wrecks at Durand, MI: The Hagenbeck-Wallace Circus Train Disaster and the Knights Templar Train Wreck.
Twenty years apart there were two major train disasters in or near the small town of Durand. This presentation highlights the theorized causes of the train wrecks and how quickly this entire community rallied to give aid to the victims; two stories with marvelous human interest dimensions.
Public urged to attend with refreshments served and time to chat. Building is handicapped accessible.
