THE 2016 SCHOOL BELL AWARD winners were announced during the Durand Board of Education’s Monday, May 9 meeting, with four groups being honored. Scott and Karla Luchenbill were honored for their continued support of the Durand Area Schools’ (DAS) FFA, FFA Alumni, and band programs; Durand Meat Processing and the Holek family were honored for their support of the FFA and FFA Alumni; the Durand Area Schools Educational Foundation (DASEF) was honored for its support of school activities; and State of Michigan employee Katie Parker was honored for the help she has provided the district in organizing its curriculum and finances.

Robert Kerr Principal Amy Holek presented the awards, saying that the Luchenbills are “always there to lend a hand” before thanking them for their “many hours of service.” She also noted that the DASEF has provided thousands of dollars that helped fund many school projects and field trips. She thanked Durand Meat Processing for annually donating hamburger for the DAS Teacher Luncheon and the processing of pigs for the homecoming hog roast, in addition to their year-round support of the DAS FFA program.
