RETIRING – The Venice Township Board honored Fire Chief Bill Baker on Monday, Jan. 4, with a special ceremony following the board’s regular monthly meeting. He continues with his insurance agency.

Baker is retiring as chief after 40 years with the Venice Township Fire Department and was presented with three special tributes during the ceremony. State Representative and fellow Corunna High graduate Ben Glardon presented Baker with a Special Tribute from the State of Michigan and Baker also received special tributes from Venice Township and his fellow firefighters.

Baker is shown here with two of the plaques hanging in his office at Baker Insurance of Lennon, which he owns. Baker will stay on as a “senior department advisor” with the Venice Township Fire Department and plans to ease the transition of Dave Ballard into the role of chief.

Baker was surprised by the ceremony and said he “is glad to have a good department to hand the responsibilities over to.” (Independent Photo/GRAHAM STURGEON)
