REGISTERING EXHIBITS during the Open Class portion of the Shiawassee County Fair is often done by volunteers who donate their time to help during fair week. Sometimes it involves family members such as the Baumgardner family. They are shown accepting canned goods from Jim Baumgras from Henderson. Baumgras was entering the exhibits for his wife, Betsy.

Mother Cathy Baumgardner, in foreground, is helping to process the exhibits with her daughter, Carrie Baumgardner, middle, and niece Erica Zwolensky, in back. The family has donated many years of time during fair week to help register the exhibits in the Exhibitor’s Building.

Exhibitors entering canned goods at the fair often find stiff competition for their items. Specific rules regarding their canning methods and how the items are in the jar are some of the main criteria to earn a ribbon in the Open Class portion of competition. (Independent Photos/Elizabeth Wehman)
