2016 POPPY QUEEN Kylee Tobey, accompanied by her grandfather Bill Dennis of VFW Post 4955, sold the ceremonial first Buddy Poppy to Mayor Ben Frederick at the Owosso City Council meeting Monday, May 2, marking the start of the annual Buddy Poppy Sale in Owosso. The poppy is the official memorial flower of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States and was adopted soon after the first poppy distribution in May of 1922.

VFW Buddy Poppies are assembled by disabled and needy veterans in VA hospitals. The VFW Buddy Poppy program provides funding to maintain state and national veterans’ rehabilitation and service programs and partially supports the VFW National Home for Children. The poppies will be sold at VG’s, both Shell stations, Hardee’s and the Post Office throughout the month. Tobey, a junior at Corunna High School, was crowned Poppy Queen in March and will be selling poppies at VG’s on Saturday, May 7 at 1 p.m. (Independent Photo/Janae Fear)
