THE 2017/2018 PATRIOT’S PEN awards banquet was hosted by Durand VFW Post 2272 on Sunday, Jan. 7. The Patriot’s Pen essay contest was open to students in grades six through eight, and this year’s theme is “America’s Gift To My Generation.” The essays were judged by Dr. Brian Boggs, Colleen and Keith Shultz, Joe and Jenny Smith, Josh Roddy and Sean Cargih.

  First place was shared by Danica Lienemann and Nolan Schubart, Aileana Fraser came in second, Allie Jones finished in 3rd place and Aidan Custer was fourth. All five earned a certificate and a cash prize, with both 1st-place finishers also taking home plaques. Shown during the banquet are (from left) Durand VFW Commander Dennis Martin, Custer, Schubart, Lienemann, Jones and Quartermaster Mike Shepard. 

  The two winners of the Durand VFW contest, Lienemann and Schubart, have qualified to have their essays judged at the district level. The grand prize for the statewide competition is $5,000.
