Willoughby Press of Owosso is closing its doors after 39 years of operation, and owners Terry and Linda Kemp are getting ready to begin the next stage of their lives without the demands of running their deadline-oriented business.

The Kemps sold their accounts to the American Speedy Printing Center of Owosso, Jan. 18, and are in the process of tying up the loose ends that come with operating a business for nearly 40 years. The couple is not sure if or when they will sell the Willoughby building at 1407 Corunna Avenue, but they are relieved that they can close their business without effecting the livelihoods of their two longtime employees, Mike Beard and Susan McGuire, both of whom are currently employed by American Speedy Printing. Beard operated as the Kemp’s pressman and McGuire as the office manager.

“I am just glad we did not have to cut them loose,” Linda Kemp said when reached for comment. “This was a blessing that we did not have to rush into this transition. This was a good situation.”

As Owosso residents, the Kemps will continue to be an active part of the community. Terry is a member of the Owosso Kiwanis Club, the Shiawassee Conservation Association and the Owosso Board of Review. The Owosso area will continue to be home to the couple.

“Our customers are our friends,” Terry said. “It will be hard to not see everyone on a daily basis, but it’s not like we are going to fade off into the sunset. We loved what we did, which always made it fun to come to work. Every day was different. While we will miss all of that, it will be nice to catch our breath”

The couple prided themselves on being “one of the first stops for new business owners” over the years, with Linda calling Terry “a great resource to those trying to establish themselves in Shiawassee County.” Among the Kemps’ more notable printing jobs were the Shiawassee County Fair guide they produced since the early 1980s and the Michigan Big Game Records magazine they produced for over 30 years.

While the closing of the family business means retirement for the Kemps, they are wasting no time filling their schedule. The couple will make their fifth trip to Japan to visit their son Toby next month and Terry, an avid hunter, hopes to see Alaska soon as well. Toby is married with two children, and their daughter, Sally, lives in the Farmington area.
