OWOSSO MAYOR BEN FREDERICK and Mayor Pro-Tem Chris Eveleth capped off Shiawassee County’s Memorial Day celebration by walking in the parade Monday evening and participating in the salute to fallen soldiers that followed at Oak Hill Cemetery.

The parade stepped off from Fayette Square on N. Washington and followed its customary route south on Washington to the cemetery, and many groups participated. An Owosso Public Safety cruiser led the Owosso Memorial VFW (top) at the front of the parade, and the Owosso Middle and High School bands energized the crowds with festive classics like “America the Beautiful.” While most parades this year have been heavily comprised of political candidates, the Owosso parade organizers decided to exclude them on this special day to instead center the focus on the veterans.

Also shown during the parade are the American Legion Riders, who joined the Harold R. Cooley Marine detachment, The Owosso Memorial VFW and its Auxiliary, and countless other veterans in honoring those soldiers who did not return. (Independent Photos/Graham Sturgeon)
