OWOSSO FIRE CAPTAIN Chris Hawn was recognized Wednesday, March 9 by the Shiawassee County Toys For Tots and Harold R. Cooley U.S. Marine Detachment for the instrumental role he played in expanding the Toys For Tots program in Shiawassee County over the past decade.

Hawn is retiring May 1 after over 26 years with the Owosso Fire Department, though his last day on the job will be April 7. He looks forward to spending more time with his wife, Carla, and two children. He is also planning a motorcycle trip to Wisconsin this summer, which he will take with his five brothers and two nephews.

Toys For Tots Shiawassee County Coordinator Gerald Alcorn and Harold R. Cooley representative Al Somers were on hand to present Hawn with the Commander’s Award, which took place at the Owosso Fire Station.

The Harold R. Cooley Detachment and the Salvation Army started working with Toys For Tots in Shiawassee County in the mid-80s, and Alcorn was named Shiawassee County Coordinator in 2005. He approached the Owosso Fire Department, which has always been one of the top drop-off locations in the county, and Hawn, then a sergeant, was named liaison to the program. The fire station has continued to be one of the main drop-off locations in the county since that time, and Hawn also spearheaded the Tim Horton’s “Fill the Boot” fundraiser that has raised thousands of dollars for Toys For Tots over the past decade.
