OWOSSO CARES BACKPACK PROGRAM – Owosso Middle School provides 182 backpacks of food to Owosso Public School students on the first and third Thursdays of every month, from October through May. The program serves students at Bentley Bright Beginnings, Bryant Elementary, Central Elementary, Emerson Elementary, Owosso Middle School, and Lincoln High School.

Student groups and service organizations sort food and assemble the food packets on the first Wednesday of each month at Young Chevrolet Cadillac Buick GMC, and drivers from the dealership deliver the food packets to the schools.

This month’s food packers were from Owosso Middle School, who paused for a photo Wednesday, March 2 while packing backpacks at Young’s. Included in the photo are (from left) Nicole Roberts, Addison Kregger, Morgan Mowatt, Jillian Bagwell, Lauren Skinner, OMS teacher Mrs. Chris Bird, Christopher Bagwell, and Jacob Hall.

The monthly cost to purchase food is approximately $1,900, with no Owosso Public School General Fund money going to the program. The school is always in need of gently used backpacks and food donations, which can be sent to Character Counts, Owosso Public Schools, 645 Alger Street, Owosso. Please address items to Jessica Thompson and indicate that the donation should go towards the Owosso Cares Backpack Program. (Courtesy Photo)
