Oktoberfest presented by Planet Fitness of Owosso returns for three days on Friday, Oct. 14 through Sunday, Oct. 16. Organized by the Shiawassee Regional Chamber of Commerce, Oktoberfest will take place in a large tent (The Biergarten) in the parking lot of Exchange and Water streets in downtown Owosso. Family events will continue on to Ball and Exchange streets.
Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Jeff Deason stated, “The Shiawassee Regional Chamber of Commerce created Oktoberfest to celebrate the spirit of friendship and to honor Shiawassee County’s heritage and agricultural traditions. With many community partners, we are planning a festive fall celebration and invite all residents to join in the fun.”
New this year is the Owosso Rotary Club’s “Tour de Shiawassee” bike ride on Saturday morning. In addition, D’Mar Banquet Center will feature a Polka Brunch on Sunday, Oct. 16. The sounds of Tejano music will fill the tent on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon. Friday evening’s music line up will be La Corporacion alternating with Lenny Gomulka and The Chicago Push Band.
On Saturday, traditional polka music, more Tejano, and lots of fun with Owosso Mayor Benjamin Frederick performing a ceremonial tapping of the keg at high noon. Conjunto Champz, a well-known Tejano band, will perform Saturday afternoon. The Biergarten will feature “Happy Hour” from 3 to 5 p.m. with buy one, get one free admission. At 5 p.m., polka music will begin with the international touring and 12-time Grammy nominee Lenny Gomulka and The Chicago Push Band from Massachusetts. The Chicago Push Band will alternate with Gerry Kaminski’s Polka network, hailing from the Grand Rapids area. Both six-piece bands will play until 11:30 p.m. There will be polka lessons, a beer stein endurance contest, and live music all in the main event tent.
Admission to the Biergarten is $10 per day or $15 for a weekend armband. Designated drivers will be provided, free admission, and a special armband for complimentary nonalcoholic beverages.
