The Owosso Community Players continue their season with the Tony Award-winning comedy “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” opening Friday, April 20 for two weekends at the Lebowsky Center in Owosso.
Vanya, Sonia and Masha are siblings named after characters created by Russian playwright Anton Chekov. Playwright Christopher Durang places those characters near a cherry orchard in the modern setting of Bucks County, PA.
Vanya (Doak Bloss) and Sonia (Anna Owens) have never left the confines of their childhood home – a rambling farmhouse in Bucks County, PA – while having to witness the glamorous exploits of their sister, Masha (Charlotte Maybury Ruppert), a famous movie actress, from afar. Their parents have died, leaving Masha to pay the bills. A surprise visit from Masha and her 20-something boy toy, Spike (Jason Durr), throws the normally quiet household into utter upheaval as she threatens to sell the house. Also on hand are the prophesizing maid Cassandra (Rachael Cupples) and an aspiring actress named Nina (Taylor Rupp), whose beauty threatens the aging Masha.
Directed by Ben Cassidy, the play will be presented at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 20; Saturday, April 21; Friday, April 27; and Saturday, April 28; and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 22 and 29.
