Looking Glass Community Outreach, formerly Looking Glass Community Services, will be holding informational open houses in Laingsburg and Perry soon. The Outreach program motto is, “Creating space for the sacred by meeting human needs” and its purpose is to discover how reaching out to help others can strengthen our communities.

Upcoming open houses will be at the Laingsburg Middle School Library on Wednesday, Nov. 30 at

7 p.m. followed by one at Perry City Hall, third floor, on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. At these open houses, the organization will be seeking input, from those attending, to help identify other needs in the area that the group might address with the help of the churches and the community at large. The group encourages everyone to please come and bring a friend to see how together everyone can help local communities.

Since 2001, Looking Glass Community Services (LGCS) has been successfully reaching out to assist individuals and families in the Laingsburg/Perry/Morrice/Shaftsburg communities, who are experiencing a variety of difficult issues in their lives. Though a large percentage of those seeking support live in three mobile home neighborhoods in this part of the county, many of these families are scattered throughout our service area.

In 2012, sources of funding for paid staff positions came to an end. In an effort to regain the organization’s footing, there has been discussions with several ministers in the service area in an effort to transition to a totally volunteer organization. These discussions are near completion and planning is underway to launch the “new initiative” through informative open houses. Once this takes place, the organization will be doing business as Looking Glass Community Outreach (LGCO).

The programs that will continue to be provided as LGCO are: Book Partners mentor/tutor program for 2nd graders, starting up again this fall at the Perry Elementary School. Community Garden at Moon Lake which is completing its 16th year of continuous operation this fall. Volunteer Taxi, offering free transportation to those who live in our service area. Currently this program is on a limited basis due to a need for more volunteer drivers. A push to expand this service will take place in 2017. Emergency Relief, on a limited basis, to families in need, mostly to help with back rent and to prevent utility shut-offs.

The following organizations endorse LGCO and include Laingsburg Business and Community Association, Perry Masonic Lodge, Laingsburg PALS, Perry/Morrice/Shaftsburg Relief Council & Food Bank, St Vincent DePaul of Morrice, Greater Perry Lions, and Friends of the Laingsburg Library.
