THE VILLAGE OF VERNON held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Saturday, June 1 at the location of the new canoe and kayak launch. The new launch is located on the Shiawassee River off Bennington Road, west of town and is part of the Shiawassee River Water Trail Coalition (SRWTC) effort. The Shiawassee River Water Trail was designated as a state water trail by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources in December of 2018 due to the work of the Friends of the Shiawassee River (FOSR), the Keepers of the Shiawassee, the Headwater Trails and a number of local organizations.
Some of the organizers present were Mike Kelly of WIN (Watershed Initiative Network), Phil Hathaway of FOSR and David Lossing of SRWTC.
The village of Vernon can add the canoe and kayak launch to its list of assets that include two parks, baseball diamonds, tennis courts and other outdoor attractions.
