Cathy Newkirk, MSU Extension Educator, is offering National Diabetes Prevention Classes right here in Shiawassee County. The workshop is specifically designed for people who have been told they’re at risk of developing diabetes. It is not for those who already have diabetes. More than half of the past participants in the National Diabetes Prevention Program were successful in achieving normal blood sugar levels and losing five to seven percent of their body weight, which eliminated their risk of developing diabetes. You too can achieve this level of success. This is a year-long program, meeting about once a week for the first six months. The actual cost of the National Diabetes Prevention Program is $450, BUT with the support of the Shiawassee United Way and Michigan State University Extension, the cost of this workshop is $25 per person. Financial assistance is available upon request. This class is supported by the Shiawassee United Way and Michigan State University Extension.
