Our American Legion Post normally hosts the Memorial Day ceremony in Elsie, and we have planned to do this again this year. I was drawing up the plans and had asked for the use of the village in Elsie, and even though the coronavirus was out, we hoped that we could make something happen. I had gathered speakers and different people and then we waited, and on April 30, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer called all things off through the 28th of May.
Memorial Day is still a day, and although we won’t be hosting a parade, or have speakers and bands and youth and veterans helping us make this happen this year in Elsie, I will put out the list of war dead from the Ovid-Elsie area over by the memorial monument on Main Street for that day. If you still remember those that have paid the ultimate price for our freedoms or you go down to the cemetery and you spend time with those that have come before us, then we haven’t missed Memorial Day at all.
The virus doesn’t care about our normality and how things normally get done. A lot of things are done differently this year, and we hope that we beat this virus this year also.
The members of American Legion Post 502 of Elsie wish you a wonderful Memorial Day for 2020.
