The Harold R. Cooley Detachment #841 (Shiawassee County) Marine Corps League will celebrate the 242nd birthday of the United States Marine Corps on Friday, Nov. 10 at the American Legion Post No. 57 in Owosso. All active duty, honorably discharged Marines and Navy FMF Corpsmen, their families, and friends are encouraged to attend. The Harold R Cooley Detachment is a dedicated group of Marines, who, along with their wives, are very active in local charitable activities. The detachment facilitates the annual Toys for Tots program, conducts monthly visits to their brothers in arms at the VA Hospital in Saginaw, and provides assistance to local charities, along with Marines and their families in distress. The detachment serves as color guard for community activities, and perhaps most importantly, is present to honor their fellow Marines at their funerals.
The 242nd Birthday Ball will begin at 6 p.m. on Nov. 10 with social hour. A five-course plated dinner, which will be prepared by Owosso High School Culinary Arts students, will begin at 7 p.m.; and the program will begin at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $20 per person in advance and $25 at the door. The public is welcome, and business casual attire is required. Individuals can call (989) 725-8886 for tickets or reservations. The Owosso American Legion hall is located at 201 E. Mason St. in Owosso.
