“Welcome Home Veterans,” a Shiawassee County-based non-profit veteran services foundation, is interested in turning the vacant Wilbur Bills Elementary at Bancroft into Shiawassee County’s first permanent veteran housing facility. They met earlier this month with Durand representatives to further discuss their ideas, which were first presented to Durand’s Board of Education during their May 19 Committee of the Whole meeting.
The group had planned to give a public presentation at the board’s June 8 meeting, but their meeting with Durand officials in advance of that date changed the timeline. The group plans to meet with Durand School Supt. Craig McCrumb during the coming week, but a date had not been set as of press deadline time.
The group, which is comprised of “Welcome Home Veterans” President Kimberly Bowen and “I Carried The Cross Foundation” President Willie Taylor, plan to use the new facility for housing, education, counseling and job placement services for veterans.
