LARRY HOLMES III, of Durand, finished second in the USA High School Clay Target League (USAHSCTL) National Championship on Sunday, July 14 in Mason, MI. Holmes is a member of the Durand High School Trap Team, which recently completed its first season of competition in the Michigan State High School Clay Target League, under the direction of Coach Derrick Alward. Joining Holmes in Mason for the USAHSCTL National Championship were Durand High School Trap Team members Gavin Brewer and Charlie Rawlins.

Of the 32,000-plus competitive high school trap shooters in the country, the three Durand shooters were among approximately 2,000 student athletes who qualified to compete in the USAHSCTL National Championship. The preliminary round was held on Saturday, July 13, and the top 400 shooters qualified to compete the following day – Sunday, July 14 – for the national championship. Scores from both days of competition were combined to determine the top shooters in the nation.

Holmes led throughout much of Sunday’s final round, after hitting 199 out 200 targets, until the day’s final group, which included the event’s eventual winner, Woodrow Glazer, from Minnesota, who won the national championship by hitting all 200 of his targets.

The USAHSCTL is a nonprofit corporation founded (in 2001) and headquartered in Minnesota. The organization began with only three teams and 30 participants but has grown to include more than 32,000 shooters from more than 20 states. The Minnesota State High School Clay Target League Championship is the largest trapshooting event in the world, with more than 8,000 student athletes participating in 2018.
