FOR THE SECOND YEAR, Laingsburg’s American Legion Post 248 invited and bestowed upon the Shiawassee County Veterans Honor Guard the honor of providing military honors as a part of the Legion’s annual Memorial Day celebration. The ceremony’s key speakers were state Representative Ben Frederick, who spoke about “how our remembering the veterans who died should inspire action – action in how we conduct ourselves in our communities, within our families and on how we approach the world around us. In our actions, we remember and honor those fallen veterans.” Les Schneider, past state commander of the Disabled American Veterans, called on the crowd to remember the names of the many veterans who have sacrificed their lives for our freedom.

Veteran Matthew Shepard recited a moving poem he had written for the occasion, “ Land of the Free, Home of the Brave.” The Laingsburg High School band provided patriotic music. Following the ceremony and traditional flag raising at the American Legion Post, a luncheon was served for all. Shown during the Memorial Day ceremony are (from left) Commander Ward Coon, Gordy Tyler, Brad Schlicker, Paul Davis, Gary Coe, Joseph Schneider, Dave Hilliker, Jesse Anguiano and Bob Crawford.
