THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS of Shiawassee County recently donated the proceeds of its annual Tootsie Roll Drive to three local charitable organizations. The three organizations receiving donations are the Arc Shiawassee, the Shiawassee RESD, and Area 22 of Special Olympics Michigan, which covers Shiawassee and Saginaw counties. Shown during the check presentation are (from left) Pete Schwab, Knights of Columbus Treasurer; Gary Bendall, the Knights of Columbus Deputy Grand Knight; Trent Toney, the Shiawassee RESD Assistant Superintendent; Mike Elbing, the recorder for the Knights of Columbus; and Larry Butcher, Knights of Columbus Grand Knight.

Each organization received a check for $1,712.12. Every penny of the Knights of Columbus’ Tootsie Roll Drive is given to special needs-based charities, and the Knights of Columbus is regularly one of the biggest contributors to the Special Olympics of Michigan. The proceeds are initially sent to the Michigan office of the Knights of Columbus, where 20 percent is taken off the top and donated to the Special Olympics Michigan. The remainder of the funds are then sent back to Shiawassee County to be dispersed by the local club.
