AN INDUSTRIAL DRIVE is proposed by the city of Owosso from N. Chipman to the former Owosso Sugar Company area off W. Oliver and extending to W. King where Cargill plans a major grain facility along the former Ann Arbor rail line. Cargill’s purchase of the city-owned property had not been finalized since there has been a discrepancy on a survey done for the city and one Cargill commissioned of the about 20-acre parcel. Grain silos and a processing plant are planned.

When the city acquired the land west of the former Owosso Sugar Company facilities about 10 or so years ago, plans were outlined to develop an industrial drive off N. Chipman to the industrial properties using the drive into what had been Mitchell Corporation of Owosso’s plant at 123 N. Chipman (now Sonoco), but nothing more was done.

The new industrial drive was proposed so that heavy truck traffic to any new industrial development would not have to use residential areas of Chipman north of Oliver as well as King Street going west of Chipman. The new industrial drive would also mean industrial traffic to operations in the former Sugar Factory would not need to use W. Oliver or the area of Chipman from Beehler to W. Oliver.
