The Shiawassee County Health Department is conducting a Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection, 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 24, at the HHW site on Chippewa Trail off M-52 just north of VG’s Grocery.

“HHW program funding is provided by Shiawassee County and the Mid-County Wastewater Collection and Treatment District, with generous donations from Waste Management-Venice Park, Caledonia Charter Township, Owosso Charter Township, Shiawassee Township and Walmart,” said SCHD Director Larry Johnson. “The goal of the program is to keep HHW out of the county rivers, lakes, streams and ditches. The collection is ‘Free’ to all Shiawassee County residents.

“Past collections have received 165,796 pounds of hazardous waste, which was safely disposed of or recycled. Most of these items would have ended up flushed down the sewer, into a septic system, buried at the local landfill or dumped in rivers and streams. Accepted materials include anything that is toxic, flammable, corrosive or reactive. We do not accept latex paint. Latex paint can be dried out and safely disposed of with household trash. Motor oil can be taken to local oil change facilities.

“No appointment is necessary for the collection; please bring any household hazardous waste materials you have starting at 8 a.m. The HHW collection is on a first come, first serve basis. For additional information contact the Shiawassee County Health Department at (989) 743-2392. For information on all HHW materials please visit http://health.shiawassee.net/Environmental-Health.”
