The Shiawassee County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Program will be held Saturday, Aug. 22, at Perry City Hall, 203 W. Polly St. in Perry.
The collection trailer will be on site from 8 a.m. to noon, unless the trailer reaches weight capacity earlier. There is no fee for the service.
All Shiawassee County residents may drop-off household hazardous waste items, including: oil-based paints and varnishes; wood preservatives; cleaning solvents; pesticides and weed killers; household batteries; oven cleaners; mothballs; transmission fluid and antifreeze; pressurized cans; metallic mercury (thermometers and fluorescent bulbs); and lead (found in shot and sinkers).
Items that cannot be accepted include: latex paint; used motor oil; automobile batteries; explosives; tires; and recyclables normally accepted at local recycling drop-off centers.
“To transport items to the drop-off site, persons should put closed containers in boxes and place them in the trunk of your car; do not mix materials; and do not carry boxes or containers in your lap,” it was emphasized. “When you arrive at the site, staff members will remove the material from your trunk. Licensed haulers will be contracted to transport the material to be recycled, reused or disposed of in an environmentally friendly manner.”
For more information, persons may call the Shiawassee County Health Department, (989) 743-2392.
