THE SHIAWASSEE FAMILY YMCA was honored on Thursday, Jan. 11 as the first-ever recipient of the Shiawassee Regional Chamber of Commerce Heart of Shiawassee Award. Chemical Bank Community President Craig Bishop surprised Shiawassee Family YMCA CEO Laura Burroughs with the award. The SRCC awards were reconfigured this year by the SRCC Membership and Marketing Committee, and the presenting sponsor is Chemical Bank.

The Shiawassee Family YMCA was chosen as the inaugural recipient of the Heart of Shiawassee Award for its importance as a resource for area youth, specifically as a “place to go after school.” The Shiawassee Family YMCA serves our youth through programs that cultivate values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement. Through the Strong Kids Campaign Financial Aid Program, people of all ages, skills, genders, races or even abilities to pay are able to utilize the resources of the YMCA. The campaign fund is used to subsidize the cost of membership and provide camp scholarships for people in need.

In addition to promoting healthy living, the Shiawassee Family YMCA is steadfast in its mission to build healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities throughout Shiawassee County. Under Burrough’s direction, the Shiawassee Family YMCA is strengthening its focus on wellness and further community involvement, partnering with such local organizations as the Owosso Soccer Club, SafeCenter, Catholic Charities and the Drug Free Alliance of Shiawassee County.

“This is a collective effort,” Burroughs said upon receiving the Heart of Shiawassee Award. “From the board to the part-time staff, this is a total team effort. I am simply the conduit. The YMCA has always focused on improving the health and wellness of families, children and communities, and we want to expand that. Throughout my years in Shiawassee County, I have always felt that, if someone does not know where to go, go to the YMCA and we will point you in the right direction. We are a community resource, and I am happy the community is recognizing that we are here to be utilized.”
