Owen A. Rood, Jr., 94, passed away on Monday, Feb. 27. Rood is formerly from Durand and bought the Durand Express in July of 1952, following his return from active duty in the military. Selling the paper in 1988, he retired to Zephyrhills, FL only to return to own the paper again in July of 1992. In December of 1997, Owen sold the publications.

Rood served in the United States Marine Corps and served in the Pacific Area during World War II and in Okinawa and North China from June 1, 1945 to April 6, 1946. He was ordered back to active duty during the Korean War and discharged from the military in May of 1957.

Rood was an active member of the Michigan Press Association from 1952 to 1997, he served on the Board of Michigan Weekly Newspapers Inc., for 29 years, four years as the President. He was a life member 3DX, Professional Journalism Society.

His father bought him his first printing press. He graduated with a Master’s degree in Journalism from Northwestern University.
