Emerson Elementary School first grade teacher Lisa Scherer recently organized a Dime Drive to raise money for Shelby Porubsky. Shelby is a junior at Owosso High School. She is in the school choir, was co-captain of the OHS Varsity Dance Team last year, and a senior line member at Kim’s Dance Dynamics. Shelby has been battling lymphoblastic leukemia since June 2016. Scherer is a dance teacher at Kim’s Dance Dynamics, where she met Shelby. Scherer said, “Our goal is to alleviate some of the financial stress from her family. This is one small step towards helping.”
All Owosso Public Schools were challenged to fill as many two-liter pop bottles as they could, with dimes. Collection continued for five days. A Go-Fund-Me page was also set up at
https://www.gofundme.com/shakeitforshelby.
The challenge was to see which school could beat Emerson in raising the most amount of money. Scherer said, “I chose dimes because it is the smallest change that will make a big difference to Shelby and her family; thus the “Small Change. BIG Difference Drive.””
The totals collected as of Tuesday, Nov. 22 are Emerson- $1,143.62, Central- $522.69, Bryant- $279, Owosso Middle School- $107.41, Owosso High School- $103.11, and Lincoln High School/Administration- $61.58 for a grand total of $2,217.41.
